U.S. to co-host 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico

U.S. to co-host 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico

A North American joint bid won the rights Wednesday to host the 2026 edition of the celebrated football tournament, defeating Morocco and bouncing back from an unfathomable United States defeat to Qatar in voting for the 2022 event eight years ago.

In a vote of more than 200 member nations of soccer's governing body in Moscow, the so-called United Bid beat out Morocco, 134-65.

"They have made a decision among themselves but ultimately it will be up to FIFA to decide", FIFA President Gianni Infantino told reporters Wednesday.

The 2026 World Cup will have 48 teams playing a total of 80 games - 60 are planned in the USA and 10 each in Canada and Mexico.

Three cities on the West Coast were chosen as potential host sites for the 2026 World Cup: Seattle, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The North American bid's selection means that the United States will now work together with Canada and Mexico to organize the tournament, and puts Trump in the incongruous position of celebrating a collaboration with the leaders of nations his administration has been excoriating as freeloaders.

Among the 22 other host city finalists are Washington and New York/New Jersey, both of which hosted matches in the 1994 World Cup, the last held in North America.

The last time the World Cup was held in North America was 1994, in the United States. The U.S. will join France, Germany, Brazil, and Italy as nations to host the cup twice, while this will be a record third time for Mexico.

Earlier, US Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro has said his bid would generate $14bn in revenue and make an $11bn profit for Federation Internationale de Football Association. "I think it will be a very hard decision that we will all have to make, the three of us in conjunction with Federation Internationale de Football Association when we have to determine the final 16, but it's a high-class problem". Like Canada, Japan had previously qualified for only one World Cup. It will be the same for the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

It's unclear at the moment how travel will shake out and how far teams will have to travel for matches.

According to Yahoo, the bid called for each of the three host nations to play in the opening matches.

Because they are all hosting, the Canada, U.S. and Mexico teams will all automatically qualify for the tournament.

All of these on their own are excellent reasons why hopefully we can persuade the 24 voters on the Fifa Executive Committee in December to award England this great prize.

Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City are up for consideration in Mexico, while Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton are the Canadian cities that have been proposed. In the expanded competition, the Concacaf region, which represents North and Central America and the Caribbean, would still receive three additional slots, decided through the qualifying process, plus one team in an global playoff.
