Unemployment drops to 5.4pc despite 21,000 full-time jobs being lost

Queensland added 5,000 jobs, lowering its unemployment rate from 6.5 per cent to 6.2 per cent, and 2,800 jobs were added in NSW, taking unemployment down to 4.9 per cent.

The number of unemployed persons looking for full-time work decreased 11,200 to 494,300 and the number of unemployed persons only looking for part-time work decreased 15,600 to 220,300.

For the first time since December, both the trend and seasonally adjusted measures of full-time employment climbed to more than 900,000 through May.

The unemployment rate fell from 5.6 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms over the month and the ranks of the unemployed thinned by 26,800 to 714,600.

Despite weaker-than-expected jobs growth, the unemployment rate has dropped to 5.4 per cent - its lowest rate since November a year ago.

However, the state's underemployment rate - those who want to work more hours than they're getting - increased by 0.2 percentage points to 9.8 per cent.

Participation rate decreased by 0.2 pts to 65.5%.

Western Australia suffered the largest drop in employment, with 1,900 fewer people in jobs, though unemployment also fell to 6.4 per cent.

But like the national figures, a drop in the participation rate helped bring down the State's jobless rate. We hope you do too. As a news organisation it offers an alternative to The Advertiser, a different voice and a closer look at what is happening in our city and state for free.
