United States, Canada and Mexico to jointly host 2026 World Cup

The joint bid from United States, Mexico and Canada won Wednesday's vote in Moscow to host the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup and De Maria hinted that Mexico, which will host 10 of the 80 games, may have won its battle to host the inaugural match.

On Wednesday, FIFA member countries voted 134-65 for the three nations over the other candidate, Morocco.

"Thank you for the incredible privilege", US Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro told voting delegates from 203 countries today.

CONCACAF, the governing body for soccer in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, has seven slots in the World Cup.

Animal prognosticators have become a traditional feature of World Cup tournaments, with Achilles following on the heels of Paul the 'psychic octopus, ' who achieved fame during the tournament in 2010 in South Africa when he successfully predicted all eight results of his native Germany's national team.

Is Canada guaranteed three host cities?

In other World Cup news, the Spanish Football Association fired manager Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the tournament. "A lot of hard work has really paid off by USA soccer, [the] Mexican Soccer Federation and the Canadian Soccer Federation to bring it to all three host countries for the very first time in World Cup history".

After considering separate bids for the 2026 World Cup, the federations that govern soccer in Mexico, Canada and the United States chose to launch a cooperative effort to host the tournament in April 2017.

According to U.S. Soccer, Canada and Mexico are each slated to host 10 matches, while the United States will host 60. Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal are in the running to be among the 16 host cities.

A spokesman for Ontario's incoming premier said Doug Ford is looking forward to the prospect of hosting games in the province, but did not respond to questions about funding. One-by-one, cities from coast-to-coast started confirming their participation in the fledgling league, with excitement rising after every announcement.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup begins on June 14 in Moscow, when the hosts face Saudi Arabia at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

"My dream is to someday compete in the World Cup, maybe even in my home town of Edmonton".

The announcement was made on the eve of this year's tournament kicking off in Russian Federation. "Morocco 2026 congratulates United 2026 for their victory and we wish them well", the country tweeted via their official campaign account.

VAR will be used during every game out in Russian Federation, with video replays used to double check and verify any contentious decisions flagged up by the main match referee.
