What does the Trump-Kim summit mean? Not a damn thing

Last year's talking point was that Trump, with his "fire and fury" talk, was leading the USA into a nuclear war with North Korea.

"With getting strong support from Mr. Trump, (Japan) is determined to settle the issue" through direct negotiations with North Korea, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference on Wednesday.

Even while buckling under the U.S. administration's "maximum pressure" policy of energetic sanctions expansion and implementation - a policy that is now dead in the water after the summit - Kim was able to complete a sufficiently credible nuclear deterrent to force the United States to the negotiating table.

Trump's claim that North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat is questionable. "North Korea is a small and weak country surrounded by big powers, and that has made North Koreans paranoid about their own national security".

North Korea's neighbors have grown accustomed to living with a nuclear North Korea.

The United States has long insisted on complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization by North Korea.

Now that's frankly ludicrous.

'I could go through a lot of nations where a lot of bad things were done'.

"Let me assure you that "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned". He said that the concepts were encompassed within the word "complete".

In a series of tweets, Trump sought to take political credit for the summit but risked undermining the U.S. strategy in the region.

Other public figures have been more directly critical.

But the president's change in approach - to reset the relationship before denuclearisation, not after, is one that the former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has welcomed: it was necessary, he says, to create a new dynamic in which talks might progress. South Korea was largely responsible for convincing Pyongyang and Washington to come to the negotiating table.

"I don't know that I will ever admit that, but I'll find some kind of an excuse", Trump said. -South Korean military exercises. But simultaneously, Seoul is aiming to prepare its defenses in case the USA decides to halt joint military exercises indefinitely or pull out the around 28,000 troops it has stationed inside South Korea's borders.

"Apparently, Washington and Pyongyang are moving exactly in this direction", Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow.

South Korea's Major General Kim Do-gyun (second from right) shakes hands with North Korea's Lieutenant General An Ik-san (second from left) at the northern side of Panmunjeom in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, Thursday.

Trump pledged to work on the issue, but the Singapore agreement included no language on the return of abductees.

Experts say that the North could possibly bring up the issue of halting joint military drills between South Korea and the USA, as Trump said he would halt "expensive and provocative" joint war games with South Korea after his summit. Previous year it tested long-range missiles that could reach the US mainland, although it remains unclear if it has mastered the technology to deliver a nuclear warhead that could re-enter the atmosphere and hit its target.

"We had a historic meeting, and made a decision to leave the past behind", Kim said.

Pompeo also pushed back against reports coming from North Korean official state media, claiming Trump and Kim agreed to a "step-by-step" process, with many interpreting the announcement as the USA giving concessions to the regime along the way.

The president praised North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a Wednesday interview, calling the head of the totalitarian regime a "smart guy" and a "great negotiator". KCNA also reported that Trump had expressed his intention to lift sanctions "over a period of goodwill dialogue" between the two countries.

The sanctions regime that has placed unprecedented restrictions on the North Korean economy is now likely to slip.

"Not all of that work appeared in the final document", Pompeo said. But it's not true that his predecessors couldn't have entered a summit with Kim's father or grandfather had they chosen to. "One should heavily discount some things that are written in other places, including from some of your colleagues", he said.
