    Got Homophobia

    By Azaan Kamau

This e-book is an introspective essay that dramatically lays out the problem of homophobia and heterosexism in the African-American culture. However, everyone can learn something from Kamau's experiences as a person of "Same Gender Love"  raised in a family who ignored and oppressed her and her gay brother.  In the heartfelt  introduction, she movingly dedicates the work to her brother who physically died of AIDS but actually was the victim of their intolerant family and society. I was also  inspired by her description of her grandparents who seemed to have given her the fierce spirit and confidence to stand up for herself and others - to reclaim her African and Choctaw heritage with the "power of a warrior ."

In her work, she defines the causes and effects of homophobia in Black families, showing how African-American male role expectations, and the idea that all things homosexual are a 'white-man's disease', has  brought about the culture of the Down/Low - which in turn has exacerbated the problem of broken families, rampant AIDS  infections, and perpetuated abuse and violence in the home.

I have to admire Ms. Kamau's passion as she takes on the Black Church, the public education system, parenting in African-American families , and even national and global politics. She 'names names' of  hypocritical religious role models that are so devastating to young LGBT as both victims and, more broadly, as confused and self-destructive lost souls. Her appendix of documented homophobic abuse, suicides and murders is a powerful testimony to her thesis.

I hope Kamau continues to document and inspire activism that is building a more humane and positive environment for the men and women of all communities.
