To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar
This is an inspiring and uplifting story of banding together, helping others, and opening the minds of those stuck in the quicksand of small-town criticism. Noxema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) and Vida Bohem (Patrick Swayze) play two very beautiful (might I add) drag queens who tie in a drag-queen competition and win round-trip tickets to Hollywood to compete in a major drag-queen competition. Vida finds compassion for a "young Latin boy in drag" named Chi-Chi (John Leguizamo), who needs some nurturing to become the drag queen he wants to be.
Vida and Noxema sell their round-trip tickets and buy a car so the three of them can begin their adventurous journey to Hollywood. During their travels, they help Chi-Chi explore the true meaning of being a drag queen. Auntie Vida and Auntie Noxie (as Chi-Chi affectionately calls them) help Chi-Chi look deep within to find her true drag-queen beauty.
Along the way, the three of them get pulled over by a racist police officer. He asks Vida to step out of the car and begins fondling her. She asks him to stop and kicks him off of her. The three of them think that he is dead, so they take off, leaving a shoe behind. Stopping at a rest stop to change, the three find that their car won’t start up again. Chi-Chi, taking the initiative, goes to the highway and finds a ride to Schnidersville.
Once in Schnidersville, the three of them realize they are stranded for two days until the mechanic can order a part for their car. At first, this discourages them. However, the three find a way to befriend the women of Schnidersville and bring them out of their shells. Vida, Noxema, and Chi-Chi help the women discover their true beauty and worth, despite many setbacks.
This incredibly funny and heartwarming movie shines new light into the world of drag queens. This movie is family-friendly, inspiring, and overall one of the best LGBT movies I have ever seen.
I give this movie 4-1/2 rainbows out of 5, which means go out and rent it. Go on… get going!
