Black History Month recognition of Bayard Rustin seen here with partner Walter Naegle

In the U.S. and Canada, February is Black History Month. In the UK, Black History Month is recognized in October. No matter when or if, Bayard Rustin was an important man of African American descent who also happened to be gay at a time when it was even more dangerous than now.

This presentation from GayCast is well worth your time. Rustin was a vital American civil rights activist directly involved in the work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. He was key to the development of both the organization and the strategy of the movement, yet he was forced to remain largely behind the scenes and uncelebrated because he was homosexual. A bizarre time of "don't ask don't tell." To know more about Bayard Rustin, also see our April 2010 "Someone You Must Know."
