Anna and Cory: An Everyday LGBT Family
Family making in the LGBT community takes many forms. Some forced by societal discrimination. Most by acceptance of our intrinsic value as loving human beings. Anna and Cory have made a fun and loving family home against a multitude of odds.
The traditional family home is expected to include a man, a woman, children and perhaps a pet or two. The same-gender homes featured in 10,000 Couples reflect a slight variation on that expectation. What we seldom consider is this: What you see from the outside of a home is frequently not reflective of the actual reality. Anna Burchwell-Craver and Cory Craver are a case in point.
Fans of the “I Love Lucy” television series will remember Desi’s iconic greeting, “Lucy, I’m home!” whenever he entered their apartment. The image it provokes for what married life should look like was definitive for the period. Women stayed home, wore aprons, and made sure dinner was on the table before the “head of the household” arrived home from a hard day’s work. Images are also invoked of a wild redhead frequently caught up in crazy schemes. Redheaded Anna’s personality appears to fit with Cory’s characterization of her as a modern-day Lucy. Cory’s desire to be the head of his family fits with the Desi image.
