Domestic violence in the LGBT community is a serious issue. The rate of domestic violence in same-gender relationships is roughly the same as domestic violence against heterosexual women (25%). It is widely believed that domestic violence is underreported in heterosexual relationships. In same-gender couple relationships, it may be as well, due to anti-LGBT oppression and hostility still often encountered within societal systems such as social services, law enforcement, health care, etc., perhaps leading some LGBT persons to fear that their sexual orientation or the nature of their relationship will not be taken as seriously as with a heterosexual couple.
Domestic violence in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender relationships is, in many ways, the same as in opposite-gendered relationships.
