With home security on the minds of millions of Americans these days, people are having a hard time deciding exactly what is needed. Obviously, there is no need for any high-tech gadgetry like in the James Bond spy films, such as infrared retina scanners, or even those large, vaulted protection rooms like the one made famous in the Jodie Foster flick "Panic Room." Nevertheless, people want to know exactly how protected they should be from outside threats.
Although the actual decision should be based off of a number of factors, such as the area's crime history, the neighborhood's overall security and the amount of valuable possessions that exist within the residence, every house should always be equipped with a home alarm. No matter if living in a city or in a suburban neighborhood, a home alarm system should always be the primary source of protection from outside threats. Even putting up the alarm company's sign in the front lawn or near the front door deters criminals from trying to break in to a home. No delinquent will risk trying to burgle a house if they know that an alarm exists.
Additionally, every homeowner should utilize and participate in a neighborhood watch program, provided that one is established. Operating as a network of concerned residents, the organization primarily serves to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior, although they have also been known to help police solve crimes within specific areas. If one does not exist, setting it up is no tough feat. Police stations often have startup kits handy and the only real commitment needed to get one going is simply to contact neighbors to see if they would like to participate. Negative answers will almost never be heard, since home security is always a concern for any homeowner.
Another great, simple security measure that is also a hit with the family is a dog. Investing in a dog is great way to ward off potential threats, especially if the dog is one of the many specific breeds of watchdogs, such as a Rottweiler or a German Shepherd. Plus, most watchdog breeds are very family friendly and are great companions for young kids. Not to mention, that a simple "beware of dog" sign near the front door, just like an alarm company sign, is a great way to prevent future home infiltrations.
If living in somewhat of a bad neighborhood, good security measures to consider include reinforcing front door and window locks, as well as investing in glass break detectors, specific alarms that listen for the high frequency sound of glass shattering, preceded by an initial thud (point of impact). Moreover, installing motion sensor lights to outside walkways is a great way to eliminate potential thieves using the darkness to creep around somebody's property. In fact, installing a light timer inside the house, to turn the lights on and off, is a great thing to have if ever on vacation. It is just common sense; if the lights are on inside, someone is more than likely home.
Of course, there are other home security measures that can be taken into account, but as long as some of the principal ones (listed above) are used, any house will be safe.
