Gregg Hierholzer and James, First in California Prison
James 33, and Gregg Hierholzer, 45, are in California. They have been together since 2006 and were married in 2008. There relationship is unique in significant ways.

In Gregg's Own Words --
GETTING ENGAGED
“James stayed a steady friend all through the different states and countries I traveled (courtesy of the US Army). In 2006 when I came back from Iraq, we met for the first time.” We started dating (as much as you can in prison) and in 2007, I proposed to him. He said yes. The only thing we kind of qualified for was for a Domestic Partnership as the right to marry was not an option in California at the time. So we got that.

The Prison had a fit over that, insisting we didn't qualify for it and technically they were right as it states you need to cohabitate together to qualify and we never did. But we told them to mind their own business, as it wasn't their job to determine who got a Domestic Partnership and who didn't. When we applied for family visits it was denied because the Counselor at the Prison said that it was against her religious beliefs. James went nuts over that one.
